The actress is in line to play the titular character's mother in the Kimberly Peirce adaptation of Stephen King's novel, reports Deadline.
Moore was rumoured earlier in the month to be appearing alongside Chloe Moretz in the movie.
Moretz won out for the lead role over a shortlist that included Haley Bennett, Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning, Bella Heathcote and Lily Collins.
Peirce's version of the film is expected to stick closer to Stephen King's novel than Brian De Palma's 1976 classic adaptation.
Carrie's mother Margaret White was portrayed by Piper Laurie in the original film, for which the actress received an Oscar nomination.
Jodie Foster was also previously mentioned in connection to the role.
Carrie will arrive in cinemas on March 15, 2013.
