Kevin Feige told Badass Digest that the series is likely to continue with another lead actor when Robert Downey Jr eventually steps down from his role of Tony Stark.
"I think Bond is a good example," he said. "Let's put it this way: I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn't, and I'm still here making these movies, we don't take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it."
However, Downey Jr is likely to remain in the role for some time, with Iron Man 3 already in the works and an Avengers sequel planned.
"I think [the character] can age with the actor, if the actor stays with it," Feige added.
Downey Jr previously said that he would hate to see another actor appear in the role.
The actor has appeared as Tony Stark in two Iron Man films and The Avengers, as well as making a brief cameo as the billionaire genius for The Incredible Hulk.
The Avengers was released in the UK last week, recording the third-biggest Thursday opening for the territory. It will debut in the US on May 4.
