Universal Pictures celebrates 100th birthday today

Universal Pictures has turned 100 today.

The film company was officially launched on April 30, 1912 in New York by Carl Laemmle, and is the second oldest movie studio.

It has distributed many iconic films such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Sixteen Candles and Back to the Future along with big franchises like Jurassic Park, American Pie and The Fast and the Furious.

Universal Pictures has a number of big movies releases this summer, including Battleship, Snow White and the Huntsman and The Bourne Legacy.

Battleship - already out in the UK - will arrive in US cinemas on May 18, while Snow White and the Huntsman will premiere in the US and UK on June 1.

The Bourne Legacy is the fourth instalment of the Bourne franchise. The new film will take place after The Bourne Ultimatum with new characters played by Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton.
