Sacha Baron Cohen, Kurt Russell quit 'Django Unchained'

By
Kurt Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen have left the cast of Quentin Tarantino's upcoming movie Django Unchained.

News of Russell's departure broke through the Twitter account of Variety writer Jeff Sneider. The Thing star was to have played Ace Woody, a ruthless trainer who pits slave fighters against each other.

Kevin Coster was previously attached to the role but dropped out citing scheduling clashes.

Cohen, who was attached to play gambler Scotty Harmony, revealed on The Howard Stern Show that he is no longer starring in the film.

"That was going to be a cameo, but I had to drop out because of [The Dictator's] press tour," he said.

Django Unchained is reportedly inspired by Sergio Corbucci's 1966 movie Django, and sees Jamie Foxx play the eponymous slave who heads across America to free his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from evil plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz is playing Dr King Schultz, a dentist-turned-bounty hunter who aids Django in his quest for revenge.

Django Unchained opens in cinemas on December 25 in the US and January 18, 2013 in the UK.
