Alan Rickman has signed up for a new project about the CBGB music club.

The Harry Potter actor will play owner and founder of the legendary New York rock club Hilly Kristal, to be directed by Randall Miller.

Miller - who previously worked with Rickman in 2008's Bottle Shock - has written a script with Jody Savin.

Hilly Kristal set up the CBGB (standing for Country, Bluegrass and Blues) in the 1970s in New York City. The club, which specialised in local acts, led to the arrival of other genres to the States, including punk, and helped launch the careers of The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads and Patti Smith among others.

Kristal's daughter Lisa will act as co-producer for the project.

Production for the film is scheduled to begin in June.

The CBGB club closed in 2006 following a farewell concert headed by Patti Smith.

Alan Rickman will next be seen opposite Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz in Michael Hoffman's Gambit, which will be released on September 14.
