Based on the bestselling author's 2008 novel, the film centres around a dying half-Chechen, half-Russian man who arrives in present-day Hamburg's Islamic community attempting to reclaim his father's ill-gotten fortune.

Hoffman will star as the head of a German spy unit attempting to identify the man, with McAdams as a woman who is drawn into the mystery.

Anton Corbijn will direct, with Film4's Tessa Ross acting as executive producer.

McAdams was last seen in romantic drama The Vow with Channing Tatum, and will shoot Richard Curtis's About Time before filming for A Most Wanted Man begins.

She will next be seen in Terrence Malick's untitled new project alongside Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem and Rachel Weisz.

A Most Wanted Man will begin filming in Hamburg in September.
