Talking about the movie, he told Lorraine Kelly: "It's an Aboriginal musical. I play an entertainment officer at a cruise ship who is thrown off because he likes a drink.
"He runs a talent night in the outback and tours with these girls around Vietnam, so standard affair.
"It's a gorgeous story, it's got a lot of heart and the music is terrific."
O'Dowd also joked about stealing candles with his fiancé Dawn Porter while attending parties at the festival.
"She's back at the hotel room, as hungover as I am, just trying to blag free stuff I'm sure.
"We went to this party thing, and they had lovely candles. So I blew a few of them out and threw them in the bag!"
The actor further mentioned his upcoming comedy project with Hot Fuzz star Nick Frost, which is due to begin filming next month.
He said: "At the moment I'm rehearsing this next thing called Cuban Fury. It's a salsa dancing comedy with me and Nick Frost as competing salsa dancers.
"It sounds ridiculous coming out of my mouth, but it's a lot of fun."
