The Life of Pi has had its release date changed.

The Ang Lee-directed big-screen adaptation of the Yann Martel novel has been moved from December to November.

The change is reportedly due to avoid the Christmas Blockbuster rush, and will now hit cinemas on November 21.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Les Miserables, The Great Gatsby and Django Unchained are just some big releases around the busy Christmas period.

The Life of Pi will now compete with the likes of Red Dawn, The Silver Linings Playbook and Rise of the Guardians on the Thanksgiving weekend.

The 3D adaptation of the Man Booker Prize-winning fantasy adventure novel stars Tobey Maguire, Irrfan Khan (In Treatment), Adil Hussain (Calendar Girls), Gerard Depardieu and Suraj Sharma.

The story follows the eponymous Pi (Sharma), a zookeeper's son who is left stranded at sea for 227 days with a Bengal tiger, a hyena, a zebra and an orangutan.
