The controversial film from director Lee Daniels received a mixed reaction after its release from a number of critics.

The Paperboy follows a reporter (McConaughey) and his brother (Efron) who try to free a possibly-innocent man (John Cusack) from death row.
However, their efforts run into trouble when Efron's character Jack James has an affair with a woman (Nicole Kidman) who Cusack's inmate has been writing to from inside prison.
