The actor will reunite with his Expendables co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger in Mikael Håfström's sci-fi thriller The Tomb.
In an interview with ET, Stallone suggested that the type of action cinema he is used to starring in is becoming less prevalent.
"This genre unfortunately is becoming... let's just say it's fading away," he mused. "You have the superheroes today which are possessed with all extraordinary powers; they can blink and a fireball comes out of there. It's great.
"And then you have a bunch of us which is just your basic male-pattern badness... Kind of like hands-on action."
Stallone went on to discuss his relationship with Schwarzenegger, which he admitted has at times been competitive.
"I think in the beginning we were competitive," he said. "There's no question about it. A little alpha territorial. And then we realised it was good for our careers [to work together]."
The Tomb follows a prison expert played by Stallone, who becomes trapped in a lock-up of his own design, while Schwarzenegger will appear as a heroic prisoner who rallies his fellow inmates.
Stallone and Schwarzenegger will next be seen together in The Expendables 2 alongside Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Liam Hemsworth.
The Expendables 2 is released on August 17 in the US and UK.
