The movie is the third in the Men in Black franchise, which stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as agents for a secret government institution that monitors extra-terrestrials.
Emma Thompson and Josh Brolin star in the latest movie, which revolves around Smith's character travelling back in time to meet a younger version of his partner, played by Brolin.
According to Deadline, Men in Black 3 came in first place on Friday (May 25) with $18 million (£11.5 million) in ticket sales.
The film, which cost $230 million (£147 million) to make, is projected to earn around $75 million (£48 million) this weekend.
The Avengers has made $486 million (£310 million) domestically during the 22 days it has been in cinemas. A sequel is currently in the works.
