Tom Hooper's adaptation of the classic 1980s musical stars Hugh Jackman as parole-breaking convict Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as the police officer pursuing him and Anne Hathaway as starving prostitute Fantine.

The pictures, released by USA Today, include a scene of Jackman and Crowe's characters in conversation while the former has assumed a new identity (above), and show a waifish Hathaway in character (below).

Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne are also seen as young lovers Cosette and Marius (below left), along with newcomer Samantha Banks in the coveted role of Éponine (below right), who performs the show's most famous song 'On My Own'.

Reps for Hathaway recently denied rumours that the actress was undergoing a crash diet to play Fantine.
