The thriller centres around a mob family that relocates to Normandy under a witness protection programme. However, the family finds that old habits die hard.

De Niro will play a former mobster masquerading as a historian researching the World War Two landings. Pfeiffer is in talks to star as his wife, a woman who habitually resorts to arson when crossed.

The script has been adapted by Besson from Tonino Benacquista's novel Badfellas.

Pfeiffer was last seen in Dark Shadows. She recently received the 2012 Cinema Icon Award.

Malavita is scheduled to begin filming in August.
