The film, which is currently shooting in Louisiana, is based on a young adult novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
Beautiful Creatures tells the story of a young teen attempting to hide her supernatural powers from her small Southern town. Thompson will take on a dual role in the film, portraying a dark witch and a small-town religious firebrand.
Jeremy Irons and Emmy Rossum also star in the movie, which is being directed by Richard LaGravanese.
WENN reports that the cast and crew were forced to take shelter during recent filming due to a severe weather warning.
Rossum wrote on her Twitter account on Thursday (May 31): "Where we are shooting just got put on tornado watch. There is a storm brewing. Just heard thunder. Black clouds rolling over head."
The actress had commented on the "unbearably warm" heat just a day before, writing: "94 degrees in sun-drenched Louisiana. Emma Thompson & I tried to make sweaty look dewy."
Beautiful Creatures is due for release in February 2013.
