The film has provided a much-needed hit for Universal Studios, which recently suffered some high-profile flops with The Five-Year Engagement and Battleship.
The figure is even more impressive as the film is being exclusively presented in 2D, meaning that it cannot take advantage of 3D's increased ticket prices.
According to Deadline, the Charlize Theron-starring fantasy will also take in $39.3m (£25.6m) internationally, performing particularly well in Asia and Latin America.
However, the film is being massively outperformed in the UK by Prometheus, which grossed 319% more than Snow White and the Huntsman on their respective debuts this weekend.
Despite this, the film now looks set to recoup its $172m (£112m) budget, with an estimated worldwide gross of around $260m (£169m).
