Garret Dillahunt has been cast in Steve McQueen's upcoming film Twelve Years a Slave.

The film is a theatrical adaptation of Solomon Northup's 1853 novel of the same name, which recounts his story as a free black man living in New York, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana.

Dillahunt will play a character named Armsby, "a fellow field hand who works alongside Solomon Northup" (Chiwetel Ejiofor), reports Deadline.

The Raising Hope star joins the previously announced Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch and Taran Killam of Saturday Night Live.

McQueen is set to shoot Twelve Years a Slave in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Twelve Years a Slave marks the third feature film from the British director, who made his debut in 2008 with Hunger and followed it in 2011 with the critically-acclaimed Shame.

Fassbender starred in Hunger and Shame, but it is not yet clear what his role will be in Twelve Years a Slave.
