Taken writer Robert Mark Kamen has been hired to adapt Stephen Hunter's novel The 47th Samurai for cinema.

New Regency is bringing the project to the big screen under the title of The Sword, The Hollywood Reporter understands.

47th Samurai is part of Hunter's popular series featuring ex-marine Bob Lee Swagger. Another book in the series served as the inspiration for 2007's Mark Wahlberg-starring Shooter.

Sword will see Swagger journey to Japan to return a sword his father acquired at the Battle of Iwo Jima to its rightful owner, but it soon transpires that the blade is a priceless katana that is being sought by shadowy forces.

Kamen's other writing credits include The Karate Kid trilogy, The Fifth Element and The Transporter series.

Sword is yet to be assigned a release date.
