Rutherford passed away on Monday evening at her home in Beverly Hills, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The actress and singer starred as Mickey Rooney's love interest across eight Andy Hardy movies in the '30s and '40s, but was perhaps best known for playing Scarlett O'Hara's younger sister Carreen in Oscar-winning 1939 classic Gone with the Wind.
Speaking at a screening of Gone with the Wind in 2009, Rutherford said that her "nothing part" in the film "turned [her] golden years into platinum".
"Anyone who had read the book sensed they were into something that would belong to the ages, and everyone was in a frenzy to read the book," she said of Gone with the Wind's enduring appeal at a 1989 cast reunion.
Rutherford also featured in long-running TV series Climax, Perry Mason and Love, American Style.
She is survived by her daughter Gloria May, and her two grandsons.
