Speaking to The Mirror, Cruise revealed that Katie Holmes is a huge fan of the genre.
"Kate sings and dances," the actor explained, "and we kind of went through the history of musicals together."
Despite having initially been hesitant about her dad's character in Rock of Ages, Cruise said daughter Suri is also obsessed with musicals.
"Suri loves Hairspray," he added. "I have watched it 15 times with her."
Adam Shankman, the director of Rock of Ages, has also confirmed that Cruise approached him with his family in mind.
"He told me he wanted to make a musical," Shankman explained.
"He would tell me that he has seen Hairspray like 100 times just because of Suri, and he really loved it."
"I couldn't imagine what I was going to do with him," added the filmmaker. "I thought if I can get the world's biggest movie star to play the world's biggest rock star, I'm golden."
Shankman revealed that, despite Cruise's eagerness, him being able to sing was still a key factor in his casting.
"We didn't say yes until we knew he could sing," he admitted. "We went to Axl Rose's vocal coach Ron Anderson [and] after one session, he came out saying, 'I can sing!'"
The Mission Impossible actor also had to learn to play the guitar for the part.
"I needed to find my own Stacee Jaxx," he said of the musical training. "It was like learning a new sport."
