'Star Trek 2' writer Alex Kurtzman: 'We're very protective of film'

By
Star Trek 2 co-writer and co-producer Alex Kurtzman has spoken about the film's slightly delayed production schedule.

Kurtzman explained that the studio wanted him, Damon Lindelof and JJ Abrams to begin work on the sequel to 2009's Star Trek a year earlier, for a 2012 release, but they refused to rush the film.

"Me and Bob [Orci] and Damon and JJ and Bryan Burk all feel very protective of Star Trek," Kurtzman told Collider.

"The studio had wanted it a year earlier and we said, 'No, we can't. We're not going to be ready and we don't want to rush this'. We felt very fortunate that the first movie was well received, and the last thing that we wanted to do was destroy that by rushing something.

"It's very precious to a lot of people. We love our Trek and we just wanted to keep it safe."

Kurtzman also attributed the film's absence from this year's Comic-Con to this protective feeling on the part of the producers.

Chris Pine has hinted that the sequel will have "a small, character-driven story" at its core.

Star Trek 2 is due for release on May 17, 2013. Watch Kurtzman's co-writer Damon Lindelof discuss the film with Digital Spy below:
