Chris Pine has suggested that his new movie People Like Us carries a powerful message about love and family.

Pine stars in People Like Us as a young man who has to deliver a large inheritance to the sister (Elizabeth Banks) he has never met.

The actor explained that director Alex Kurtzman's film shines a light on how personal choices can have wide-ranging consequences.

"Undeniably we all make bad choices, every single one of us. A lot of those choices affect other people and a lot of those choices hurt other people," Pine said, reports Flicks and Bits.

He continued: "It's that final choice of whether or not you're gonna hold on to it, whether or not you're gonna move forward with anger and resentment and trying to diminish the other person by saying, 'You screwed up! It's your fault'. Which very well could be true.

"But whether it's more important to do that, or whether it's more important to accept the person for exactly who that person is, and move forward with love and openness."

Pine stars in People Like Us with Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass and Michelle Pfeiffer.

People Like Us opens in cinemas on June 29 in the US.
