Marvel Studios has a mystery film dated for a 2014 release, which is tipped to be a solo project focusing on the King of Wakanda.
Mackie told The Daily Beast that he would "love" to tackle the lead role of T'Challa should Black Panther prove to be the next Marvel superhero to make it to the big screen.
"If Black Panther is made into a movie, I would love for it to be along the lines of Batman. It has to be an adult action hero. I would love to be a part of it, though, and I would sign on to it today," he said.
Black Panther movie rumours have emerged numerous times in the past. Last year, it was reported that documentarian Mark Bailey was on board to produce a script for the film.
Wesley Snipes, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Djimon Hounsou are among the actors to have been linked with the title role since Marvel secured the screen rights to the property in 2005.
Ant-Man, to which Edgar Wright has been attached for some time, is also in contention to become Marvel's next big screen solo offering.
