The release date for Jeremy Renner's upcoming action film The Bourne Legacy has been pushed back, it has been announced.

Co-star Rachel Weisz has said that the new film will continue the "very realistic" tone of previous movies in the series.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Universal has moved the upcoming film's release from August 3 to August 10.

A representative from Universal, which has produced the film, says that the move was done to distance The Bourne Legacy from the upcoming blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises.

In a statement, the studio said: "Just as The Avengers demonstrated marketplace sustainability that well outpaced traditional patterns earlier this summer, the industry expects a similar trajectory for The Dark Knight Rises.

"Moving one week further from its release will give The Bourne Legacy an even greater opportunity to maximize its opening box-office potential."

The Bourne Legacy is due for release in the UK on August 13.
