The Social Network actor stars in the film as Peter Parker opposite Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Rhys Ifans.
Garfield told the New York Daily News that he had a harrowing experience on set after failing to realise that his Spider-Man suit was not equipped for water.
"I had to get wet, and I just kind of dove in and didn't realise that water on the mask made it impossible to breathe," the actor explained. "So I was kind of, like, suffocating. I couldn't get any oxygen! I water-boarded myself."
He praised fight co-ordinator Andy Armstrong's quick thinking for diving in and removing the restrictive mask from his face.
The Amazing Spider-Man is a reboot of the Sam Raimi films which starred Tobey Maguire in the Peter Parker role.
Garfield, who has been a fan of Spider-Man since he was a boy, recently said that he just "wanted to do it justice" in this new retelling.
The film is scheduled for release on July 3.
