Battleship faired well in overseas markets, but has thus far taken in just $63m (£40.2m) in the US on a $235m (£150m) budget.
The director spoke about Battleship's underwhelming performance at the US box office in a new interview with MTV News.
"The movie kicked butt internationally, but we kind of ran into a wall when Avengers refused to go away. The Avengers outperformed everything. It was impossible for Battleship to get any oxygen," Berg commented.
Berg went on to suggest that a Battleship sequel is very much tied to its US earnings.
"What I need everyone to do is go see Battleship now that they've seen Avengers five times. If they do that, we can definitely make a sequel," he explained.
"Battleship is a film that I would definitely like to do a sequel to. I loved making that film. I had a great time with it."
Berg was most recently linked to directing a film version of Buzz Bissinger's book Father's Day.
