Steve Coogan has spoken about his role in The King of Soho.

Coogan stars in Michael Winterbottom's upcoming drama as infamous porn tycoon Paul Raymond.

"I think what Raymond did was to introduce sex to Britain in a very adult way," Coogan told Empire.

"It wasn't the smutty, schoolboy sex of, let's say, the Carry On films, it was something more sophisticated - continental, even."

Coogan went on to discuss the sense of Raymond being trapped by his surroundings, joking that the furthest he had ever got from Soho was to Wimbledon.

"I said to Michael, 'I think that if [Raymond] ever tried to leave Soho, a big bouncing ball would come to take him back there, like Patrick McGoohan in The Prisoner. The furthest he ever got was Wimbledon'."

The King of Soho reunites Coogan and Winterbottom following their previous collaborations on The Trip, A Cock and Bull Story and 24 Hour Party People.

Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton and Imogen Poots also star in the comedy drama, playing Raymond's first wife, girlfriend and daughter respectively.

A rival film is also in development, with Tom Hiddleston reportedly set to star as Raymond.
