"It was my favourite thing in my life that I've ever done," the actress declared. "He's my favourite filmmaker, my favourite writer. I've adored him ever since I was able to read and watch movies. Doing this was kind of the best thing ever."

Gerwig went on to compare shooting To Rome with Love with attending "a very tiny, very awesome summer camp".

"In a way I feel like I didn't really get a chance to experience [working with Allen] because I was too nervous the whole time," she joked. "I kind of wish I could go back and live in the moment."

She added: "I mean, I lived in the moment with like all the other actors and that was really fun. But there was an element of 'Oh my god Woody Allen is walking over to give me a note' and not really being able to process that because it was so exciting."

Gerwig's To Rome with Love vignette also features Alec Baldwin as a guide who is only visible to some.

Allen recently stressed that that he never worries about having to explain the logic of including a supernatural element like Baldwin's character.

To Rome with Love is now playing in US cinemas on limited release.
