Exclusive: Hammer Horror's 'The Quiet Ones' begins filming

By
Hammer Horror's The Quiet Ones has begun filming on the outskirts of London.

The studio's 1970s-set follow-up to The Woman in Black stars Jared Harris as a charismatic Oxford professor investigating the possibility of creating ghosts from negative human energy.

With his controversial methods shunned by colleagues, he goes off the grid and sets up shop in a remote country house to conduct his experiment, accompanied by two students (Erin Richards and Rory Fleck-Byrne), and psychiatric patient Harper (Olivia Cooke), who has volunteered to act as the source of the negative energy.

Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman) plays a local cameraman who's hired to document the experiment, but becomes increasingly troubled by Coupland's (Harris) ethically dubious approach.

"He doesn't have small ambitions," Harris told Digital Spy of his character. "He's out to destroy God, or the idea of God. By creating [ghosts] from human agency, he gets to shoot down the idea of there being any sort of divine power at work causing supernatural events."

Director John Pogue - who previously helmed Quarantine 2: Terminal - went on to explain that while the methods are extreme, they are by no means implausible and are in fact based on a real experiment conducted in 1970s Toronto.

"The early '70s were a time where telekinesis and all these supposedly paranormal ideas were thought to be worthy of very intellectually rigorous study," Pogue said.

"And gradually when that didn't pan out, they started closing those departments, and now there are maybe three or four left in the world."

Needless to say, the experiment is not likely to end well for many of the people involved, with Pogue employing a combination of straight narrative and a found-footage element (hence the role of Claflin's character) to tell his disturbing story.

The Quiet Ones is currently filming in Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire, and is likely to be released in 2013.
