The actor told MTV that the Sherlock star's villain will draw out new qualities from Captain Kirk and help the character grow.
"[Star Trek 2] is structured so that the antagonist brings out all of the qualities in Kirk that need to happen in order for Kirk to grow. As you know from Benedict, just watching him, vocally, he's fascinating," said Pine.
"He's got this deep resonant voice. He has a fascinating face. He's a lovely guy and just super smart. You want to see something firing in his brain, so he's not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy. Benedict brings those kinds of smarts."
Pine has previously described the Star Trek sequel as "character-driven", while writer Alex Kurtzman suggested that it will focus on Kirk as he learns what it means to be a captain.
Directed by JJ Abrams, Star Trek 2 is slated for release on May 17, 2013.
