Philip Seymour Hoffman has been officially cast in Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games.

Following reports earlier today, studio Lionsgate confirmed that Hoffman will play Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee, succeeding Wes Bentley's Seneca Crane.

The Oscar-winning actor, best known for his lead role in Capote, was first linked with Catching Fire last month.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth will reprise their roles from the first movie, while Francis Lawrence replaces Gary Ross as director.

Several key parts in the follow-up are yet to be filled, with the characters of Johanna Mason and Finnick Odair attracting the most speculation so far.

Catching Fire, set for a November 2013 cinema release, is expected to be shot in Atlanta from the autumn.
