Quentin Tarantino sees 'Django Unchained' as 'Shaft' prequel

By
Quentin Tarantino has claimed that he envisages Django Unchained as a prequel of sorts to the blaxploitation classic Shaft.

Speaking at a panel for the movie at the San Diego Comic-Con, he revealed that he sees Kerry Washington's character, Brunhilde von Shaft, as an ancestor to the eponymous hero of the 1971 film.

Deadline reports that the director then burst into a rendition of the legendary Shaft theme song.

There followed the revelation that there is also a character in the film who ties into the 'Tarantino-verse' - all of his films thus far have had characters whose histories have overlapped - but the helmer refused to elaborate, choosing to keep the exact details as a surprise for audiences.

The Pulp Fiction director then confirmed that Sacha Baron Cohen was no longer in the film, but said that Jonah Hill does make an appearance as a member of a pre-Civil War version of the KKK called the Regulators.

Tarantino also revealed that he was motivated to make the film by the fact that most Westerns go out of their way not to mention slavery, leading him to replicate Western tropes in the South with a black lead character.

The panel concluded with a 'sizzle-reel' of footage from the upcoming film, including star Jamie Foxx practising gun-slinging against a snowman, and wreaking vengeance against one of the men who had enslaved him with a whip.

Django Unchained is released in the US in December and in the UK in January 2013.
