Another 'The Thing' movie planned

Published Friday, Nov 17 2006, 14:05 GMT | By Ben Rawson-Jones
A third film version of The Thing is to enter production.

Trade magazine Variety reports that the Universal Pictures project will be "a companion piece" to the 1982 John Carpenter classic according to the producers, rather than a straight remake. The executive producer of the current Battlestar Galactica series - Ronald D. Moore - will take on scriptwriting duties.

Both Carpenter's film and the 1951 version The Thing From Another World were based on the 1938 John W. Campbell Jr. short story Who Goes There? - featuring the attempts of a remote Antarctic base to fend off a vicious alien creature that has been recovered from the ice.

The 1951 version - overseen by Howard Hawks - was recently featured in a Digital Spy list of recommended Halloween movies.
