'Dark Knight Rises' is second-top grossing film of 2012

The Dark Knight Rises has become the second-highest grossing film of 2012.

Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie has overtaken Ice Age 4 in its total global takings, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Dark Knight Rises has grossed a total of $732 million (£467m) to date, passing Ice Age's $716m (£457m).

The Avengers maintains a comfortable lead with $1.46 billion (£930m) - the third-highest takings of all time.

Warner Bros has said that The Dark Knight Rises's box office sales - which are lagging behind the preceding The Dark Knight - were adversely affected by the shootings at a screening in Aurora, Colorado.

The superhero films Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man have accounted for over a third of US summer box office sales.
