Jake Gyllenhaal has said that he is glad that his role in An Enemy does not require grueling workouts.

The forthcoming drama sees Gyllenhaal as Tertuliano Máximo Afonso, a depressed divorcee and history teacher who spends his nights reading about Mesopotamian civilisations. He also plays a double of himself in the film.

Gyllenhaal revealed in a new interview with Details that he has not worked out in recent months, as his fitness is not important to the role.

"I haven't cycled in a long time. I don't run anymore," Gyllenhaal explained.

"Do I take care of my body and take conditioning seriously? Yes. But exercising regularly doesn't fit the energy of the character I'm playing now."

Gyllenhaal has undergone serious physical conditioning for his past roles in Persia and Jarhead which left him "exhausted".
