Condon, who directed Stewart and Robert Pattinson in both Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and the upcoming Part 2, suggested that the young couple deserve the same respect they have always afforded their fans.
His comments come in the wake of the revelation that Stewart cheated on real-life boyfriend Pattinson with her married Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders.
"The fact is, these are actors playing parts, and maybe it's not such a bad thing that people be reminded of that," Condon told Entertainment Weekly.
"Both of these actors gave heart and soul to the Twilight movies, not only during shooting, but also by navigating so graciously the whole life-in-a-fishbowl aspect of the phenomenon.
"Above all they have always shown great respect for the fans who made these movies such a success. Now it's time that some of that respect be returned to them."
Summit Entertainment has stated that the scandal will not affect press for Breaking Dawn, which is the final instalment in the Twilight series.
Pattinson, meanwhile, will reportedly put no restrictions on what questions reporters can ask during his upcoming US press stint to promote Cosmopolis.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 will be released on November 16. Watch a trailer below:
