In a separate statement, the filmmaker hailed 3D TV as "the future of home entertainment".

"I'm a huge proponent of the technology and very pleased that Avatar can be viewed in the living room the way it is meant to be seen," he said.

Avatar
Producer Jon Landau added: "As the number of homes with 3D televisions continues to grow, we thought it was important to bring the biggest 3D film ever right into your living room.

"This is the only way fans should experience the world of Pandora and this release offers the highest picture quality possible."

Avatar is the highest-grossing movie of all time with worldwide box office takings of more than $2.7 billion.

Sequels Avatar 2, 3 and 4 will reportedly shoot simultaneously, with the first opening in cinemas in 2015 at the earliest.

In addition to Avatar, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release Cameron's Titanic on Blu-ray 3D on September 10.
