Bourne Legacy director: Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross a new kind of hero

By
The Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy has said that Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) is a different kind of hero than Jason Bourne (Matt Damon).

The filmmaker explained that it was crucial to develop a totally unique character for Renner to establish him as the franchise's new leading man.

"We knew how demanding the part was going to be. You have to be able to do everything," Gilroy told USA Today. "There was no mystery about what an actor [Renner] is. He's incredibly physical. People knew who he was, but they hadn't pinpointed him yet."

He further explained: "This character is so different than Jason Bourne. He has to be aware of where he comes from and who he is and that he doesn't want to go back. He has to be a badass killer.

"At the same time, when you find out his origin and what's at risk for him, there has to be an intellectual nimbleness and there has to be a sweetness there."

Renner filmed many of the dangerous and death-defying stunts for the film, which he admitted was a daunting task.

"I did all of them except for a handful of the motorcycle tricks… You can't fake fighting. You either can do it or you can't," he explained.

"There was a lot on my shoulders to not get injured. You get banged up. You limp off, ice up for the night, and do it again tomorrow."

Gilroy previously praised the Bourne film series as a "shambolic success".

The Bourne Legacy won the US box office over the weekend, knocking The Dark Knight Rises off the top spot.
