In 2072, time travel has been outlawed and is used only by the mob to carry out hits, in which the target is sent several decades back in time to meet an assassin.
Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one such hired gun, but discovers that his bosses want to 'close the gap' by transporting his future self (Bruce Willis) back to the present.
Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels and Paul Dano round out the cast, and are glimpsed in the new trailer.
Writer-director Johnson previously directed Gordon-Levitt in his 2005 feature debut Brick.
Willis has described Looper as "better than anything I've ever done" before.
It was recently confirmed that Looper will open this year's Toronto Film Festival.
