The actor portrayed a cop-turned-politician in The Place Beyond the Pines during filming last year.
However, it was during a shoot in August that Hurricane Irene struck Schenectady, New York, where filming was taking place.
Cooper was away from the set at the time, but immediately returned to the location when he heard what had happened and was astonished by the destruction that the storm had caused.
The star told The Hollywood Reporter: "Everything was flooded. [The crew] had to go in with rowboats to take the film from one place to the next."
The Place Beyond the Pines was not the only production affected by Hurricane Irene - TV drama One Tree Hill had to be shut down as the storm swept through the US East Coast.
