The epic film - based on the David Mitchell novel of the same name - follows a grand timescale that explores a Pacific sea voyage in 1849, the start of a revolution in the 22nd century and a broken, post-apocalyptic land in the distant future.

Each actor also plays multiple roles, with Berry appearing across different chronologies as a journalist, an elderly composer's adulterous wife and a woman leading the remnants of humanity to a new home.

"The real courage that this film demanded was from the actors," said Lana Wachowski, as the cast gathered on stage at the cinema.

"There are very few movies that ask as much as we asked of the actors."

Cloud Atlas is scheduled to be released on October 26 in the US and in the UK on February 22, 2013.
