'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' tops Australian box office

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted has topped the Australian box office on its first weekend on release.

The DreamWorks animated sequel holds off competition from The Watch and Resident Evil: Retribution to land in first place.

Kath & Kimderella, last week's number one movie, falls down three places to number four, taking in $1,095,050.

The Expendables 2 completes the top five with box office receipts of $796,609.

Elsewhere, musical comedy The Sapphires continues its impressive box office run with $685,760 for a sixth-placed finish. The film has now taken in more than $11 million after six weeks on release.

The Australian box office top ten for the weekend period September 13 to 16 (all takings shown in Australian dollars):
