The clip - which has Vietnamese subtitles - introduces the audience to Piscine 'Pi' Patel, played by Suraj Sharma, and the fate that befalls his family when they attempt to move their entire zoo from India to Canada.
The trailer - which features the Coldplay track 'Paradise' - then moves on to show Pi stranded on a lifeboat with tiger 'Richard Parker', as well as flashes of his experiences whilst adrift over the next 200 days.
Life of Pi is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Yann Martel. The screenplay was adapted by Oscar nominee David Magee (Finding Neverland) and stars Gérard Depardieu as well as Bollywood actress Tabu.
Tobey Maguire had originally signed up to play journalist Martel in the film, but reports emerged earlier this month that the role was recast in accordance with Lee's wishes for the film to feature a completely international cast.
The Spiderman star was replaced by Rafe Spall (Prometheus), who can now be seen in the trailer.
"I fully support Ang's decision to go a different direction for this role in Life of Pi," said Maguire. "Ang shared a lot of the film with me, and what I saw was absolutely beautiful."
Life of Pi will be released on November 21 in the US, and December 21 in the UK.
