The Ted star was announced as the host of the 2013 Oscars by the gala's organisers on Monday (October 1).
MacFarlane discussed the high-profile hosting job with Deadline, admitting that he never expected to helm the movie industry's biggest night.
"I have done a fair amount of hosting in the past but nothing of this magnitude," he said. "I was very, very pleasantly surprised."
The Family Guy creator also hinted that he will have surprises in store for Oscars viewers.
"It is the Academy Awards so I think you can expect anything," he teased. "It's the Oscars so you always want a musical component and you want an injection of comedy and so I think it will be a mix of many elements."
MacFarlane follows in the footsteps of previous Oscar hosts such as Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Steve Martin and Billy Crystal.
The 2013 Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Centre in LA and be broadcast live on ABC.
