Centring on two suburban families who have always been close, Julian Farino's film casts Meester as prodigal daughter Nina, who returns home for Thanksgiving and begins an affair with her father's married best friend David (Laurie).
"It's a complete 180-degree turn from anything I've ever done," Meester told the New York Daily News. "This fulfils something within myself that I could never find in my series [Gossip Girl]."
Meester previously acted opposite Laurie in two episodes of his medical drama House, playing a patient who became besotted with Laurie's misanthropic doctor.
"The love that Hugh and I portray is not some sort of physical infatuation," the actress continued. "It really comes across as a relationship that has respect and a real rapport. And that was easy with Hugh. He's someone I've known and I genuinely could fall in love with."
The fifth and final season of Gossip Girl begins on the CW on October 8.
The Oranges comes out on October 5 in the US, and December 7 in the UK. Watch a trailer below:
