Written and directed by The Usual Suspects scribe Christopher McQuarrie, the thriller stars Cruise as drifter and ex-military policeman Jack Reacher, who is called in to investigate a case in which five people were shot dead by sniper fire.
Released by Yahoo, the poster focuses on the anti-heroic character of Reacher, who is the protagonist of British author Lee Child's series of crime novels.
Rosamund Pike plays the defence attorney of the main suspect, who (along with Reacher) believes his protestations of innocence. Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo and Werner Herzog are also co-stars.
The film, which is based on Child's novel One Shot, had its title changed to emphasise Cruise's hero.
Cruise has said that he is sensitive to the backlash his casting caused among some fans of Child's novels, who maintained that his look and demeanour were wrong for the role of Reacher.
Jack Reacher will be released on December 21 in the US and December 26 in the UK. Watch a trailer below:
