The British movie, about the affect of the death of Princess Diana on the royal family, has already received four Golden Globe nominations. Both awards are seen as possible predictors of Oscar success, the producers having awarded eventual winners 11 times out of 17.
The movie will be up against Babel, The Departed, Dreamgirls and Little Miss Sunshine when the final decision is made on January 20.
Dame Helen Mirren, who stars in The Queen, is also up for honours in Elizabeth I, which was nominated for best long-form television show, along with Bleak House.
Medical drama House, starring Hugh Laurie, was nominated for best episodic television show and the US version of The Office is up for best episodic television comedy.
