The actor visited Beijing on Monday when the film became the first ever James Bond to make cinemas in the country. Many copies had already circulated on illegal DVDs, in which there is a huge black market.
"Someone tried to sell me a copy last night," he told reporters. "I was wearing a hat and glasses so they didn't recognise me."
"It saddens me. Going to the cinema is a great experience. You're missing out by watching a bad copy of a DVD. As far as I'm concerned cinema is a collective experience and you get 50 per cent more by going to the cinema."
The film, which is being released largely uncut and uncensored, is expected to make £6.7 million in China.
