The black-and-white stop-motion animation, a remake of Burton's own earlier short film, centres on a young boy who revives his deceased dog Sparky through a science experiment.
Burton was joined by voice cast members Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short and Martin Landau on the red carpet, alongside producer Allison Abbate. BFI Chief Executive Amanda Nevill and the London Film Festival's new director Clare Stewart also attended the opening.
Frankenweenie will open in UK cinemas on October 17.
