The Oscar winner revealed that he would consider doing another film in the 007 franchise, but said that the decision depends on many factors.
Speaking to Time Out, Mendes said: "I think the choice is in the audience's hands.
"If people love the movie and they want to see another one from the same people who brought you Skyfall, then that would mean a lot to me."
He also said that if he was to do a new Bond film, he would to try to make it as "special" as the latest picture.
"I feel like I've put everything I want to do with a Bond movie into this Bond movie," he explained. "I would have to feel the same again to do another one.
"So, it would take a lot of thought to try and make it as special to me as this."
Mendes is currently directing the stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which is set to open in 2013.
