The Comedy Central host and self-professed Lord of the Rings fanatic revealed the news in a recent interview with Playboy, where he admitted that he did visit the New Zealand set where the Hobbit trilogy was filmed.

He said: "Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year. I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations. I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing. Jackson knows I'm a big fan of the films."
When asked if he got to appear on camera, Colbert smiled and said: "Could be."
Though Colbert did not reveal how big or small his possible cameo will be, it will not take place in the first of the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to cinemas on December 14.
